A Question and a Giveaway

I am getting ready to build my own website, but with a link back to this etsy shop. I checked domain names and sure enough pumpkinlights.com is taken. Also a few weeks ago, someone mentioned that Pumpkin Lights didn't seem like a good name for a baby boutique, as it made them think I sold candles. So I am not sure how to proceed from here.

1.Do I want to keep the Pumpkin Lights etsy shop and just get a different domain name? I was thinking of PumpkinLightsBaby?

2.Use PumpkinLightsBaby as my domain name, plus open a new etsy shop also called PumpkinLightsBaby so they totally match?

3.Or totally change it from PumpkinLights and use something that seems more baby-like? One reason I didn't want something overly baby sounding is because a lot of my items are more just for kids in general and not just babies.

That is where the giveaway comes in. I am looking for suggestions. Leave a comment with your choice, either 1, 2, or 3, before next Sunday morning, Sept. 7. I will have my daughter randomly pick a name of the commenters and they may pick anything from my shop normally priced at $20 or less for free!

My choice would be 1.
Unless you can change your name on etsy without building a completely new shop, I wouldn't change etsy shops because you'll lose all your feedback! I would keep your etsy shop and get a domain name as well.
I wouldn't worry about making them match! Your banner and avatar for your etsy shop could always say Pumpkin Lights Baby! That way all of your previous customers could still find you easily, and new customers could see your feedback. I think you have already built a business as PumpkinLights, I wouldn't change it completely. An Add on like Pumpkin Lights: Handmade Goods for Your Little Ones would be more appropriate!

You have lots of sales under your current name. I don't think I would change your etsy store if I were you. Your current customers might be come confused, and you don't want to lose all your hard work thus far. I will have to pick number one...to use pumpkinlightsbaby as your domain name so that everyone can still find your etsy shop and you can promote your new webpage to direct people there.

Good Luck!

I would pick #1. I would keep the esty shops name. I am sure lots of people have yopu as there favorite and would be confused if you had a different name. Lots of people have non matching names.

I would say #1 because you have an established shop on etsy and the name is familiar to your buyers. It would be a chore to start over with a new etsy shop name. I would use a suitable name that still have pumpkin in the name.

My choice would be #1. I wouldn't work about them matching. I think they will be close enough.

keep the etsy name w feedback and get a different..so 1

Unknown said...

I say choice #1. You could have a similar domain name, but keep the existing shop.

Bunny B said...

I say, go with 1. Your domain can stay but your banner can be the new name :) I'm sure you've already a fan base.. unless if your customers go to your original domain and are then forwarded to the new domain, that'd be okay. Thanks for the chance :)

3. Pumpkin Lights sounds to Halloweeny and not baby enough (and this is coming from someone who calls their daughter "pumpkin").

peg42 said...

Hard decision! I would go with #2 Use PumpkinLightsBaby as my domain name, plus open a new etsy shop also called PumpkinLightsBaby so they totally match.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Jennireesa/Jennifer W. said...

I would go with option #2.

kygirl said...

I would say #1 you don't have to have matching names. You could always have a banner on your etsy shop for the new site.

torinem said...

I would go with #1. you don't want to loose current customers or confuse anyone who is already interested in your shop. Good luck!

kdkdkd said...

I would go with #2 You add baby to the name and can match it to a domain name. Everything works but people can still find you because the original name is still part of it. Good luck whatever you choose, I am sure it will all work out in the end. :)

#1. It's a good choice.

I would go with #1 but keep the name

I think my choice would be 2 so that people would have no trouble finding either. Thank you!

I think #2 sounds best. That way everything matches, and it sounds nice too! Thanks!

I would say #2 sounds the best to me.

janetfaye said...

Since you have an established store I would go with option number one.

I would go with number 1. I wouldn't change your shop on Etsy...keep all that feedback.

#1 is my vote

I wouldn't change your etsy shop since you're on a roll there already. I'd go with option #1.

I would go with option 2 because if the store name and domain name match than it will be easier for people to remember.

Unknown said...

I would have to suggest for you to take up Option 1. You've already got a following and both names are relevant. Good luck! And thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see your decision :)

jojoanddash said...

Since you already have this shop established I wouldn't change it so I guess I'm going with #1. I do think that the name sounds like you sale Halloween items which is why I found you.

Meredith said...

I say #3 because I know when I'm shopping I am attracted by a name that sounds like something I want. I wouldn't know what to think of Pumpkin Lights, although the name is nice it doesn't entice me or inform me. How about Pumpkin Child Boutique or something like that. It tells me it's a boutique that sells things for children and it sounds homey like it would have something nice and cuddly! Best of luck! Can't wait to see how everything turns out!!

taxchyk said...

i'd have to go with number 3. While it's tough to lose good feedback, the shop name doesn't really seem to reflect what you're all about.

Tammy said...

Or totally change it from PumpkinLights -- number 3 -- if you design things for children as well as babies reflect that in your name - but I agree Pumpkin Lights as a name for a shop makes me think of candles or home decor.

Lena said...

I say Option 1! You are doing so well and starting from scratch would be so much [unnecessary] work. I'm all for hard work, but never when it can be redirected to something more important.

TinaW said...

I say option 2 - it will be the easiest for customers to follow, I think. tinawittmer(at)yahoo(dot)com

tatertot374 said...

Thank you for having this. I would go with option #2. So that way it would be easier for your current customers and future ones as well. Thank you!

kristilb19 said...

I think Option 1 since you sell other items not just for baby!

TINKMH said...

My choice would be #3. I really thought it had to do with pumpkins, lights or halloween! After all, its getting that time of year soon!

Anonymous said...

Personally I would pick #1. You already have customers and don't want to lose what you've done so far. This option seems to be the most logical to me. Thank you for the contest!

Smooshy said...

#3 but maybe change it just a little to something like Punkin Lights.

Jessilyn82 said...

I'd go with Option #3-start fresh with a new name that gives people a better idea about what your business is about. Something that conveys that it's for children in general and not necessarily just babies. Then start a new Etsy shop that will draw in your target audience a lot more efficiently. Definitely keep an Etsy shop though, I've found so many cool things and shops on there that I would never have gone to their main website otherwise. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I'd say (1) stick with what you have.
pumpkinlights.net/.org.info/biz are all available though, why not choose one of them? .net is a pretty neutral choice, as it doesn't suggest your nationality or if you're running a business or organistaion.

I would choose 2 and or 3, if you don't make the name match, then it wouldn't make sense and you would think they're two different shops. If you do 3, I would be thinking of Light of Life since kids are the light of people's lives. They're our future 'us'. Is there a reason why you chose to have pumpkin in the name or lights? Maybe change the name to Pumpking Life. Light Little Pumpkin? Tell me if you use any of those just so I can know :D

Anonymous said...

If you are planning on changing your store a bit such as a new type of clothing or renovating, then I would choose to have a new one. You could do number one but have it say "pumpkin lights store" that way it has something to do with the original store. If you put pumpkin lights then pumpkin lights store, it makes me thing that you have the original store, then you created another store but for babies.

this is a follow up from my first post becuse I just thought of this.

Unknown said...

3 How about Pumpkin Delights?

Science Of Adam said...

Make them match! PumpkinLightsBaby or maybe Lil'PumpkinLights... well, you probably can't do the "Lil'" ... but something to show that your stuff is for more than just babies.

Also, just keep being proactive asking others to spread the word about your products and no matter what you call it, people will find you.

Choice #3. Maybe something like Little Softies. Love the Aloha Surfer Reversible Baby and Toddler Blanket.

Love the name, Pumpkin Lights. How could you possibly do better? I note your blog is popular--comments way up there. I thought I was doing well (all time high of 58 comments), but it looks like you will soon be passing me by.

Hetal said...

baby's etsy shop should have "baby" in the domain name to get more search results.

so you should change the domain name altogether.

herry123_us@live.com

Unknown said...

I say # 3...I think it's more catchy than adding baby at the end.

Tragicgal said...

How about #3 but only change it to something like "pumpkinkids" or "Littlepunkin's". So that it would include babies and kids. Good Luck!

I like option # 1. ithink that the established etsy shop is fine how it is and your followers know that name.

I think #1 is a good option. And maybe drop the "lights" and just do Pumpkin Kids?

#1. It's a good choice.

I'd go with #1. You already have a name and an identity. Seems a shame to change it. (Would the pumpkin lights site be willing to add a button pointing to you?)

yellowlabs said...

I'd go with #1.

kerri69 said...

I think 2 because pumpkinlights reminds me of a fall decor i like lil pumpkins it more sounds more of what it relates to

Candie L said...

I think #1 would be your best optin (and from the posts) the most overwhelming opinion of everyone else also. It just seems that this would be the smoothest transition

Anonymous said...

I would go with #2. I like the name and think using one name for everything would be good, kind of keep the name fresh in peoples minds and not confuse them so much. However, you do have a lot of sales using your orginal name so you should take that into consideration also. What ever you decide...Good luck!

Helen said...

Pumpkin Lights also makes me think of Halloween and nothing else. While you've already established a name for youself, I would work finding a name that best describes your products as it's easier to establish a new name, early on than to try to change it further in time.

I don't think I would change your etsy store if I were you. You have built up the business at etsy and you would lose your feedback.
Thank you for the opportunity to win!

Lori said...

I wouldn't change your etsy shop because of feedback, but I don't think Pumpkinlightsbaby is a great name. What about PumpkinLightsKids.com? That's more general and still in line with the original.
